Today many people take care of their health. We try to eat less and avoid eating some foods, which are regarded to as unhealthy. Such ones are junk food, sweets, fried foods and so on. Some should be not consumed at all, such as coke. Some foods we just try to avoid, as we are sure, they can make us fat and unhealthy, but these foods are in reality not so bad and can even do you good. Here are some of them. Continue reading »

You may have already heard, that the most important meals of your day is breakfast. A hearty breakfast makes your day, gives you force to work for hours. If you had a light breakfast, you will on the contrary be weak and fatigue all day long. But Chinese scientists have recently found, that it has nothing to do with reality, as hearty breakfasts can make you obese. Continue reading »
Norwegian scientists have conducted a study on the interconnection of the weight and duration of life. It has occurred, that in 90 percent of cases too little weight and a too thin figure reduce the duration of life by 9 years, while excess weight and obesity reduce life by only 4 years. Obese people suffer from cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and articular diseases much more often than thin ones. Too thin people are more prone to malignant tumors, stroke and depression. So, it’s very important to be careful with dieting and always know when to stop. It’s better to be more active in sports, than to diet.
A recent Dutch research has shown, how important sleep actually is. The scientists have analyzed the data on sleep and feeding preferences of 180 Netherlands residents. Besides, chronic sleep loss causes the alteration of metabolic function, which also contributes to obesity. It also Continue reading »
Researchers at Purdue University’s Ingestive Behavior Research Center have compared the way artificial sweeteners (saccharin) and sugar effect health. Sugar substitutes are much sweeter than natural table sugar, but have practically no calories compared to 15 calories/teaspoon contained in the latter. Nonetheless, experimental mice, who ate yoghurt sweetened with zero-calorie saccharin, consumed later more calories and, as a result, gained more weight and fat than those mice, who ate yoghurt with glucose (simple sugar). Scientists from the Institute of Food Research in Norwich, Britain, are developing natural appetite suppressants, which will curb hunger. They effect on the brain area, which is responsible for hunger. It should work the following way: the molecules of this preparation blocks the breakdown of fat in the gut triggering a hormonal response, which tells the brain, that you have eaten enough. Researchers hope, that such preparations will soon be added into a whole range of foods, especially unhealthy ones, like cakes, biscuits etc. This means, that the products themselves will suppress your appetite. This is a good news for those who want to eat less and lose weight.
A new study conducted by Nestlé Research Center along with a team from Imperial College London has found, that probiotics, such as drinking yoghurts, which contain live bacteria, may have a serious effect on the metabolism. As probiotics contain potentially beneficial bacteria playing an important role in the metabolism, they have an effect on the biochemistry of the gut microbes. Probiotics contain so-called “friendly” bacteria, which help the digestive system. The study of how exactly it occurs was the goal of the research. Continue reading »
A new study of eating habits and obesity was carried out by the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. The study found, eating out doesn’t mean gaining excess weight, the thing is, where you eat and in general – where you live. If one lives in the neighborhood with many fast food restaurants they are more likely to gain excess weight and become obese. And, vice versa, those living near to full-service restaurants are not in the high-risk group and tend to be thinner. Continue reading »

A two-stage study has shown, that women, who follow Mediterranean diet in pregnancy, also protect their babies from childhood asthma and allergy. During the first stage of the study, 1997, doctors recruited 507 women who attended an antenatal clinic on Menorca, Spain. These women were quizzed about their dietary habits. Six years later the children of these women were examined for asthma and were tested to see if their organisms responded to six common allergens. But ironically the same “ugly” person would be the only one, who notices these defects. Continue reading »
Today I decided to write on the topic which is concerned with both beauty and health of both women and men – cholesterol. Cholesterol is manufactured by liver from digested fats and is essential for the synthesis of vitamin В and some hormones. Cholesterol is carried in the blood and its level is influenced by the diet, because cholesterol is present in food. If blood cholesterol level is too high (more than 60 mg), this is dangerous, because too much cholesterol blocks the arteries, interrupts the blood supply to the heart and leads to atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease (or heart attack) and stroke. Some count calories, some follow a diet which made a celebrity slim, some pay attention to the fat content of the food, use pills against hunger or develop their own diet, such as “no more than 5 cakes a week”. The others spend hours at the gym, swim a lot, exercise at home while watching TV. There are different ways, but the goal is the same: to be beautiful, sporty, get rid of body fat.
