An extra hour of sleep is the most natural anesthetic. 10 hours of sleep save you from pain better than codeine, or any other painkilling pill.
As stated by the head of the working group of the Henry Ford Hospital, Dr. Timothy Roehrs, hypersensitivity may appear due to the fact that people are not getting enough sleep. This is confirmed by the experiment, which involved 18 volunteers, divided into random groups. Some of them slept for 8 hours at night, while others had up to 10 hours of sleep. During the day, the experts would estimate the degree of the participants’ sleepiness, noting the heartbeat rate, eye movements, brain waves, and muscle tone.
In addition, sensitivity to pain was also estimated by means of checking the person’s reaction to heat. Those who slept for 10 hours could keep their hand near a heat source for 25% longer than those whose sleep lasted for 8 hours. The same result could be achieved by taking more than 60 milligrams of codeine. Thus, the advice about getting some sound sleep, invariably given by doctors to their patients, gets another scientific justification.
