Casey Anthony, mother of 2-year-old Caylee, had been facing a good deal of charges and some of them stuck – but not the gravest ones. She has been acquitted of first-degree murder, child manslaughter and aggravated child abuse.
Caylee Anthony disappeared in June 2008 and six months later, in December, her skeletal remains were found in the forest in the vicinity of the Anthony residence. That started a case on May 24 that drew national media attention.
The prosecution tried to prove that the child’s mother, 25-year-old Casey, had disposed of the body of her child in the forest and went on with her life. She was charged with first-degree murder which meant the death penalty if she had been found guilty.
The defense advanced the theory that the little girl’s death was accidental. According to the defenders Caylee got drowned in the swimming pool, and instead of reporting the accident to the police her family members, led by the girl’s grandfather George Anthony, hid the body. A jury subscribed to the theory at the final sitting in Florida on Tuesday.
The accused ended up charged with feeding false information to the police on four counts.
Following the ruling a spate of comments from celebrities burst forth, with Kim Kardashian and Tori Spelling voicing their shock and disbelief that Casey Anthony should have been found not guilty. Ricki Lake claimed to be “disgusted” by the verdict.
Jason Biggs chose to quip on Twitter about a glove that didn’t fit, while Star Jones said she had accepted the verdict being a believer in the jury system. Yet she added that she didn’t think Casey Anthony had realized that her daughter was dead.
The false information sentencing will take place at 9 am Thursday.
