At the European Congress on Obesity, nutritionists strongly criticized the widespread habit to eat lots of white bread. White bread largely contributes to weight gain, as experts are convinced.
A study carried out by scientists from the University of Navarra in Spain has proved that white bread is to blame for the growing statistics of overweight people. Their five-year health surveillance and weight control involving nearly 10,000 people revealed a connection between love of sandwiches and a tendency to gain extra pounds. The researchers have found out that people who ate at least 120 grams of white bread a day were 40 percent more likely to gain weight compared to those who ate no more than 60 grams or less per day.
Reporting on their research at the Congress, the experts spoke about the following pattern. It turned out that white bread lovers did not usually keep to a diet or aspire to healthy nutrition. When they were offered to give up eating white bread, they replied that they did not feel saturation without it.
Experts from other countries are also concerned about the current situation of eating much bread and other products made from white flour. Thus, the head of the UK Association for the Study of Obesity Jason Halford said that white bread contains too much sugar and salt, and much fewer nutrients than whole wheat bread.
