At least part of the truth about one of those flash-in-the-pan marriages – that of country singer Kenny Chesney and actress Renee Zellweger – came out on Oprah Winfrey Show last Friday as Kenny decided to unburden himself.
Their 2005 romance budded at a tsunami relief benefit concert in January and, to the astonishment of their fans, blossomed into a wedding that was held in May at Chesney’s island estate. Four months was all it took. Annulment followed, with a short dispute over Zellweger’s use of the term “fraud”, and was finalized in December.
Now Chesney can speak about it frankly, admitting to his succumbing to panic. He wasn’t ready to what was coming, he owns, and had to protect his life.
“I look at my life as a box,” he explained. “So everything that I put in – learn how to play guitar, put that in the box. The friends I made. I put that in the box, and my career grew. Everything around me—all of the awards and all of the songs I wrote and all the success and everything – I put in that box. That box built grew into this wonderful house.”
And what happened between him and Zellweger, he says, didn’t go into the box. “She’s a sweet soul, no doubt about it, but I just wasn’t ready.”
Whatever threat the marriage posed to Chesney’s inner house, he saw break-up as the only way to regain his self-assurance.
Since that time the singer added to his house four Billboard Touring Awards and seems to be happy dating former Miss Tennessee Amy Colley. His new concert film Kenny Chesney: Summer in 3D will be on before April is over.
