Theirs was a great marriage – as long as it lasted, and that is for about a year. Maybe Katy Perry and Russell Brand could have lived down their differences, but they didn’t choose to.
As soon as they were past Christmas (that they had spent apart) the British comic went to Los Angeles to file for divorce. After he did so (on Friday), he issued a statement to PEOPLE in which he said they were ending their marriage; nevertheless, he added, he cherishes only the warmest feelings for Perry and believes they will maintain friendly relations.
At least that is commensurable with what they said about each other in the first period of their marriage, when they used to gush about each other. Brand, 36, claimed to have a spiritual and emotional connection with his wife that inspired him to love all people. Perry (born Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson, 27), called the actor her great man of God.
The two have been in relationship since 2009. After four months of dating Brand proposed to the pop star, and they had an unforgettable wedding ceremony in October 2010 at a popular resort in northern India with riding elephants and spectacular performances by jugglers and acrobats.
In spring the British actor stated in an interview appearing in the Redbook that he would be glad to cease his partying and settle down. He was ripe for it, he explained, for he realized that it was no good behaving “wild, like a wild animal,” because it is incompatible with marriage and gets people into trouble.
But lately rumors started circulating that their relations were not like they had been with the couple constantly at one another. Perry and Brand used to deny the rumors flatly, Brand saying definitely to Ellen DeGeneres in December that their marriage was happy.
The Superior Court filing does not give a separation date for the spouses.
