Amy Poehler thought she made it the second time around… But she didn’t, even though she made a dash for it.
A couple of years ago Poehler, now 40, was an Emmy Award nominee for Saturday Night Live, but went away empty-handed. This time she must have been dead sure that she got it – so as soon as she heard Rob Lowe and Sofia Vergara call out her name as a nominee at the Best Lead Actress in a Comedy Series Emmy show Sunday, she hurried onto the stage to grab the trophy!
Unfortunately, that was only the beginning of the naming, and the winner was yet to be called out – and it turned to be somebody else!
Other co-nominees – Melissa McCarthy, Edie Falco, Laura Linney, Tina Fey, and Martha Plimpton – took up the trend and followed her onto the stage as they heard their names called out. Lowe saved the embarrassing situation saying that “everyone is a winner” and they were all worthy of the title, but this time the Emmy goes to Melissa McCarthy.
The 41-year-old actress wasn’t expecting it and started shedding tears of amazement as she was presented with a tiara and a rose bouquet – understandably, since it was her first Emmy win.
The Mike & Molly star was profuse with thanks for her family and costars and expressions of her bewilderment. “Holy smokes!… I’m from Plainfield, Ill. and I’m standing here and it’s kind of amazing!” she cried.
