Once, a big screen adaptation of the life of the Queen of Egypt, Cleopatra, nearly bankrupted a movie maker giant, Twentieth Century-Fox. But this doesn’t seem to stop movie makers to take another try at portraying adventures of one of the world’s most beautiful women ever. And Angelina Jolie may be taking on a role of the legendary Queen.
The project producer, Oscar winning Scott Rudin (No Place For Old Men), recently revealed that the role is being developed with Angelina. The movie will likely be directed by Steven Spielberg who wants to turn Cleopatra into 3-D epic with $30 million budget. Initially, the director of Shindler’s List and Saving Private Ryan planned to invite Renee Zellweger and Hugh Jackman as stars.
Back in 1963, Cleopatra was portrayed by Elizabeth Taylor. She met Richard Burton – who played Marc Antony – on the filming site and fell in love with him. Both actors were married at the time. Their romance followed by wedding and then divorce made a lot of buzz. But the movie was a box-office flop, becoming one of the most unsuccessful projects in the history of movie making.
“New” Cleopatra is also known for her “work romance”. She met Brad Pitt who was married to Jennifer Aniston during the filming of Mr. and Mrs. Smith.
But Brad Pitt doesn’t have to worry that the story would repeat itself. Stacy Schiff, the author of a new book about Cleopatra’s life, already described her idea of the perfect Marc Antony.
It is obviously Brad Pitt. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are like modern Taylor and Burton. The press may get them married and divorced just overnight. Stacy Schiff also said favorably about Rudin’s choice of Jolie:
“I think she’d be perfect for it and I can see a possible Oscar in her future”.
