It is widely known that the Americans fluorinate tap water to disinfect it. However, it has recently been reported that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has decided to reduce the level of fluorine in water.
The decision has been motivated by the nation-wide increase of the cases of dental fluorosis – the disease of the tooth enamel. In other words, both lack of fluorine and its abundance are harmful to human health. Fluorosis is characterized by the formation of dark spots on the tooth enamel. Later, if the level of fluorine is not reduced in the body, it may cause pathological changes in bone tissue.
One cannot but mention the Americans’ special “love” for fluorine. Previously, only tap water had been saturated with this compound, but not long ago the chemical element was actively added to drinks, bottled water, and even food for children. Before that fluorine had been a component of dental hygiene means – toothpaste, rinsing liquids, and bleaching compositions.
Reconsideration of the standards of tap water fluorination and the reduction of the fluorine concentration are absolutely essential, since the average citizen of the USA gets far more excessive amounts of the substance per month. Especially taking into account the tendency to fluorinate almost everything in the USA – maybe, except for bread – one considers such measures necessary to be carried out as soon as possible.
