Oddly enough, popcorn turns out to be the product, which contains more antioxidants than fresh fruits and vegetables, though the scientists have frequently warned about the harm of it in recent years.
This was announced by Joe Vinson, a leading expert on nutrition from the University of Scranton, USA, at the 243rd National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society (ACS). According to him, popcorn contains a large amount of antioxidants, known as polyphenols. When compared with fruits and vegetables, popcorn includes only 4% of water, so it contains the maximum concentration of this substance, and it is in the part that the fans of “popcorn” really do not like as it always gets stuck in one’s teeth. However, it contains the most polyphenols and fiber.
According to Vinson, popcorn is the perfect snack because it contains 100% unprocessed wholesome grains. Other grains are usually processed and blended with other ingredients. Therefore, even if the packaging of cereals is marked as “wholesome”, it means that there are not more than 51% of wholesome grains there. At the same time, a portion of popcorn can provide you with 70% of the daily required amount of wholesome grains. It contains 300 mg of polyphenols, while servings of fruits or vegetables contain less than 160 mg.
Of course, it is not that easy. Vinson warns that this condition will only work if the popcorn is made with the least amount of oil, or when it is not used at all. He also calls not to forget that fruits and vegetables contain many other useful nutrients, after all.
