Specialists from the Cancer and Bio-Detection Dogs research center (southern England) trained their dogs to detect dangerous diabetes complications. During the study they discovered that 65 per cent of the specially trained dogs, whose owners had insulin-dependent diabetes, could determine by smell if the owner has hypoglycemia – fall of insulin to dangerous levels under the action of insulin.
Overall, 212 pets participated in the study. The owner’s urine was used as substrate for examination. The specialists from the center already started training 17 dogs.
