An elderly lady got a new eye thanks to the surgeons from Australia. Her empty eye socket was implanted with the so-called bionic eye.
It consists of a video camera (it was placed in the eye socket) and a processor, which is attached to the ear. The electrodes of the processor transfer the information to the brain, and the latter deciphers it as a visual signal.
The patient lost her eye because of illness. The new one was to become its substitution. The woman cannot see perfectly well with her new bionic eye; however, she is able to distinguish between light and dark objects and detect obstacles. This is a breakthrough in medicine. Transplantation of a human eye is still an impossible operation: it is impossible to combine the finest vessels and nerves. However, a bionic eye could be an alternative, especially when we take into account that the technology will be improved.
