3 Dairy Products Myths Busted

Cheese, milk and yogurt are the most popular foods. However, there has been a lot of conflicting information about them lately. Doctors decided to dot their i’s and cross their t’s and separate fact from fiction.

Kefir

Nobody doubts the fact that this fermented milk drink is useful. It is especially valuable for containing not only calcium and phosphorus (these essential elements for skeleton, brain and the nervous system are contained in other foods as well), but also organic acids, which contribute to their assimilation. Therefore, the composition of kefir is considered the most balanced.

There is a popular misconception that you should drink a glass of kefir before bedtime. Meanwhile, such a habit can lead to insomnia, since the drink’s composition contains substances, which stimulates nerve cells.

Drink kefir at least two-three hours before bedtime. According to doctors, it is not only useful in terms of sleep hygiene, but also allows for better absorption of calcium.

Milk

Milk is full of vitamin A, which is useful for vision and healthy skin, and vitamin D, needed for strong bones and UV protection. This drink also contains the valuable folic acid.

However, you can often hear the opinion that adults should avoid drinking milk, because with age, the body loses the ability to digest lactose, and intolerance may develop.

According to doctors, it is a myth and nothing more. Milk intolerance, which causes flatulence, bloating, stomach pain, and diarrhea, is a genetic feature that has nothing to do with age. If as a child you used to drink milk without any problems, then it is not necessary to give up the drink over the years. And even in the case of lactose intolerance dairy products such as yogurt, cheese and cottage cheese should be included into the diet, experts believe.

Cheese

Cheese contains much protein, which helps the body to resist viruses and bacteria. So a piece of cheese in the season of colds and flu is a great assistant to your immunity.

Many mistakenly perceive cheese as an essential element of the protein diet and start eating cheese in great amounts when hungry. However, it doesn’t help lose weight at all.

A 100-gram slice of cheese “weighs” about 350 kcal. In addition, many cheeses almost half-consist of fat. So do not be surprised if your waist grows after you start snacking cheese. This product is meant for moderate consumption.

Yoghurt

Nowadays, even schoolchildren know that yoghurt contains beneficial bacteria for the intestinal microflora. However, saliva and gastric juice destroy these bacteria, so that, ultimately, an extremely small number of them survive in the gastrointestinal tract.

Yoghurt is only useful when the number of microorganisms in it is not less than 107 colonies per 1 g of the product. These types of yogurt do not contain preservatives and sweeteners, and have a short (not more than a month) shelf life.
