The scientists say that reducing salt intake by only 15%, people can extend their life. According to the authors of the study, this is the most efficient way to improve health after struggling with smoking.

One should reduce the amount of salt not with the help of public announcements, but by means of regulating the food industry. Most of the salt that enters the human body with food, is added while manufacturing products at food companies.

Previously, there had been doubts as to the danger of salt, but now it is pointless to debate on this issue, as the doctors say. Salt raises blood pressure and increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Propaganda of the harmful influence of salt would be useful for the authorities: the doctors have estimated that reducing salt consumption in the United States by a third would help the health care system to spare up to $24 billion per year and save thousands of lives.

However, the North American Salt Institute refutes the findings. The need to reduce salt intake is a myth based on popular misconceptions, rather than on objective scientific data.
