Scientist from the Sydney’s Garvan Institute of Medical Research found out that vegetarians have weaker bones. During the study they examined bone strength in 2700 people. The results showed that vegetarians‘ bone density is 5% lower than in that other people.
Moreover, vegans have the weakest bones. Yet, no difference was found between the bone structures of meat-eaters and lacto-ovo vegetarians (people who do not eat meat, but eat eggs and diary products).
According to the scientists, the study showed that vegetarian diets lead to lower (although not necessarily drastically lower) mineral density in bones.
Let us remind you, that mineral density in bones can be tested with the help of densitometry.
The study was published in the American Journal of Nutrition.
