The scientists from the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Northumbria have discovered a new property of cherry juice. It turns out that it improves the quality of sleep.
The researchers particularly recommend the Montmorency cherry juice: it increases the concentration of melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep. To confirm the properties of the juice, the researchers gathered a group of 20 volunteers. For a week, they were drinking 30 milliliters of cherry juice or some other juice every day.
To evaluate the levels of melatonin, the experts collected the samples of urine before and after the experiment. In addition, the volunteers were wearing sensor watch tracking the cycles of sleep and wakefulness.
It was discovered that when the participants drank cherry juice, there was an increase (by 15-16%) in the concentration of melatonin in the urine. They also slept 25 minutes longer, and the sleep quality was improved by 5-6%.
Among other things, the volunteering admirers of cherry juice said that they were not sleepy during the daytime.
Earlier, the scientists had discovered another pleasant feature of cherry juice – the ability to reduce muscle pain (e.g. after training). It must be a pleasant reason for adding a little bit of this delicious drink to your daily diet!
