Psychotherapeutic effect of music heightens if you listen to it with your eyes closed, according to researchers at Tel Aviv University in Israel. The experiment showed that listening to music with one’s eyes closed caused more active response from the brain.
Volunteers listened to the melodies from Hitchcock movies and popular tunes. First they listened to the music with their eyes closed, then with their eyes open. Researchers found that brain activity was at its peak when the volunteers listened to emotionally charged melodies from the movies with their eyes closed. But even light popular tunes triggered brain activity better when listened to with one’s eyes closed.
Scientists believe that musical therapy (as well as for such serious conditions as Parkinson disease and Alzheimer’s disease) should be performed with patients’ eyes closed.
