Recently, researchers from Oxford University and the Medical Research Council proved that it is almost impossible to lose weight with the presence of an unusual gene.
In the study, the scientists injected an additional copy of FTO (obesity gene) into the DNA of mice. Their offerings were completely healthy physically, but differed from their counterparts by their excessively increased appetite and visibly put on weight.
Prof Frances Ashcroft, the research leader, said: “This work makes us confident that FTO is an important gene that contributes to obesity. Too much activity of this gene can lead to putting on weight by overeating”.
Not only the mouse, but 14 % of Britons carry two defective copies of FTO, which increases their risk of obesity by 70% and diabetes by 50%.
