Enjoying too much fried food can wreak havoc with your health, and the famous cook now knows it firsthand: Paula Deen has revealed she has Type 2 Diabetes!
Opening up on The Today Show on Tuesday the Food Network host said she had had the disease diagnosed three years ago while she was having one of her regular health checks. She has been keeping it secret all this time as she was trying to come to terms with the news. “I had nothing to give with my fellow friends out there,” explained Deen, 64 – but now she wants the world to know that diabetes “is not a death sentence.”
Out to prove it, Deen, who is now a salary-drawing spokeswoman for Novo Nordisk, is putting together Diabetes in a New Light intended to deal with simple methods to control the disease.
Possible factors that brought about diabetes? Pushed by Al Roker, the cook had to admit that her diet which includes lavish amounts of butter had to do with her condition. She linked lifestyle, stress, genetics and age as other factors that affected her health, and finished off to say that chances are Type 2 Diabetes will be a challenge for many people.
Of course what we saw on her show were various delicious recipes that endangered the waistline badly, but Deen claimed she always eats in moderation herself and kept reminding of the moderation principle to those who watched her. Her 30 dishes per year is not enough to get people in trouble healthwise, said she, and everyone has to acknowledge their responsibility for their own condition.
She also quoted herself saying to Oprah Winfrey several years back that she was a cook and not a doctor.
Nobody’s going to stop eating, Deen maintains. It’s a basic life necessity, and she associates her bringing goodies to the table with the bringing of hope, urging people to get on with an occasional yummy meal to help them along.
