Split ends in the hair are the most common problem among those who don't have their hair cut regularly. When hair grows to a certain length, the protective layer of the hair, a cuticle, breaks down, causing the hair fiber to split. It often happens with hair ends, but hair may also split all the way down. As a rule, split ends are 1-inch long, and they are lighter than the rest of hair.
