The scientists decided to use the new material based on spider silk as the basis for growing skin cells. The innovation will be used in plastic surgery – for the treatment of burns in particular.
The material was developed by the engineers of plastic and reconstructive surgery at the Medical School of Hannover in Germany. The new material based on silk is five times stronger than collagen and has a network structure, which can grow skin cells.
Hana Wendt, one of the authors of the study, claims that “spider silk has amazing mechanical peculiarities which cannot be invented by a human being.”
