What Makes Us a Leader?

American psychologists and sociologists have conducted a joint study to find out negative personality traits that help one’s career. This was published on one of the articles of The Psychological Science journal.

Leadership

The scientists conducted a large-scale survey of successful people, learning different leadership qualities.

So, the experts were able to find out that sometimes negative manifestations of the human person paradoxically help in climbing the steep social ladder. In particular, the study showed that indecision and cautiousness contribute to the development of productivity.

Also, the scientists concluded that narcissism, critical attitude towards others and even excessive dramatization of events curiously enough help in developing the leadership skills.

However, the authors emphasize that the set of negative personality traits on itself does not make someone a leader – adaptability of these features to the needs of a team and specific situations is important.

For example, narcissistic and overly self-confident people usually very well pass interviews for work, but having received the desired position they begin to take advantage of other people which causes negative atmosphere in a team, almost closing their way to leadership.
