I've always heard and read that it isn't a requirement to wash hair every day. 2 - 4 times a week is usually what's recommended.

This is complete nonsense. You cannot damage your hair by failing to wash it. I've seen articles about people who have not washed their hair for years, and they have quite healthy hair. You also might note that many a curly haired person uses the Curly Girl or "no 'poo" method of hair cleansing, in which one completely forgoes shampoo. I have yet to hear of anyone who has damaged their hair using this method.

The assertion that it is necessary and even beneficial to completely remove the coating covering your hair is also ridiculous. Your scalp secrets a natural oil, called sebum, which moisturizes your hair. It is what makes healthy hair look shiny. Completely removing all the sebum from your hair will make it dry and brittle. It will also send your scalp into overdrive to produce enough sebum to compensate, making your hair look oily. In most cases, the result will be hair that looks parched right after you wash it and is a grease pit the next day.
