A new study of advantages of digital mammography and traditional film mammography was recently conducted by the University of North California in Chapel Hill. The study has found, that digital mammography is a better way of examining breasts than traditional film mammography for some women. Approximately 42,000 women were examined during the research. The scientists divided the women into 10 different subgroups looking at combinations of the three factors – menopausal status, age and breast density – and compared the accuracy results of digital versus film mammograms in all subgroups.

A new study conducted by Nestlé Research Center along with a team from Imperial College London has found, that probiotics, such as drinking yoghurts, which contain live bacteria, may have a serious effect on the metabolism. As probiotics contain potentially beneficial bacteria playing an important role in the metabolism, they have an effect on the biochemistry of the gut microbes. Probiotics contain so-called “friendly” bacteria, which help the digestive system. The study of how exactly it occurs was the goal of the research.

A new study of eating habits and obesity was carried out by the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. The study found, eating out doesn’t mean gaining excess weight, the thing is, where you eat and in general – where you live. If one lives in the neighborhood with many fast food restaurants they are more likely to gain excess weight and become obese. A two-stage study has shown, that women, who follow Mediterranean diet in pregnancy, also protect their babies from childhood asthma and allergy. During the first stage of the study, 1997, doctors recruited 507 women who attended an antenatal clinic on Menorca, Spain. These women were quizzed about their dietary habits. Six years later the children of these women were examined for asthma and were tested to see if their organisms responded to six common allergens. The researchers found, that the diet of children did not influence the fact whether they had these problems. The main reason was the dietary intake of the mothers while pregnant.
