Risk of Death in Car Crash Doubles if You Had Little Alcohol

Drinking a glass of wine or a few beers at a friend’s party could be much more dangerous than we think. A new study showed that having just one or two drinks within six hours before driving increases the risk of a car accident.

Dr. Stefano Di Bartolomeo and his colleagues studied effects of alcohol and meal consumption in 326 drives who were admitted to the emergency room after a car crash. The researchers asked patients what they had been doing before the crash and then compared those activities to their previous cases of safe driving. Scientists factored in meal consumption because it may slow down the alcohol intake and make drivers sleepy.

Overall, drinking alcohol doubled the risk of a car accident, according to a report published in the journal Public Health. Having as little as one or two drinks within six hours before driving increased the risk of the accident 2.17-fold. Having more than three drinks tripled the risk. Also, people who didn’t get enough sleep – those who slept less than usual within 24 hours before a crash – were at doubled risk of being involved in a car crash within two hours after having a meal. For those who slept less and drank alcohol, the risk of a crash was three times higher.

Liposuction Can Be Great Source for Stem Cells

Researchers at the Stanford University claim that fat removed during liposuction surgery can be used as a valuable source of stem cells. Fat cells are ready to be reprogrammed into stem cells right away without preliminary growing in the lab for several weeks. Skin cells that are often used to produce stem cells must be grown from three to four weeks before they can be reprogrammed.

Researchers have developed a method for converting different types of cells into pluripotent stem cells that, in their turn, can be reprogrammed into the cells of various tissues. Experts believe that cells called lypocytes that are found in fat are easier to be transformed than other cells. The study was published as a report in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

According to the author of study, Dr. Joseph Wu, not only can researchers start with a lot of cells, they can reprogram them more efficiently. Before fibroblasts (skin cells) can be reprogrammed, it takes three weeks to grow them. And fat cells can be used right away. Scientists harnessed lypocytes earlier to reverse multiple sclerosis.

Face Cream Nearly Killed a Woman

A woman, who was using a face cream to sustain her youth and beauty, nearly died instead. The Hong Kong Health Department issued a warning against using one of the face creams after the 58-year-old woman was sent to the hospital suffering from mercury intoxication as she used the cream.

The woman got sick in July. She was tortured by headaches, dizziness, shivering and pricking sensation in legs. Before that she used the face cream twice a day during one month. Laboratory test showed the mercury content in the cream was 43, 000 times more than allowed.

The incident raised concerns among health care specialists. Authorities are already investigating the case to track the manufacturer of the cream as its label provides no other information than the product’s name.

Mercury has long been used in cosmetic products for bleaching, especially in Asia where pale skin is considered as an attribute of beauty and nobility. Big doses of mercury, however, are very toxic and detrimental to the nervous system and kidneys, which in severe cases may lead to chromic kidney disease.

Scientists discovered that people with high level of face symmetry, when the left side of the face is very similar to the right side, have the lower chances of having psychological problems when they are 79-83 years old.
